Why Nebraska Football Can't Break the 25-Game Curse!

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Coach Tim Miles stops by SMQ to talk Bob and Jay off the ledge after the UCLA debacle.

Coach Miles advises Nebraska to stay the course on their turnaround. "Stick to your process" and "Stick with the team."

Matt Rhule is in familiar territory.  2024 could be just like 2023. Or will they rise above the fray and use the bye week to turn things around in the final three games?

Coach Miles, a 400+ win coach gives sage advice to an ailing Husker nation. USC, Wisconsin, and Iowa with a combined losing conference record of 9-11 certainly give Nebraska the opportunity to become bowl-eligible and finish on a positive note.

Can Nebraska's Defense Hold the Line Against UCLA? | Pre-Game Breakdown!

Sunday Morning Quarterback

SMQ invades California for the UCLA/USC takedowns!

We predict “Windy and 60s”, just like Bob and Jay on Saturday!

Don’t take UCLA lightly they have had a fierce schedule.

But SMQ predicts a stout defense, stable special teams, and that Marcus Satterfield is sick of getting chirped in every direction.

Should Nebraska’s OC Walk Home After Another Loss?

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Nebraska bounces back on the road at Ohio State with a respectable showing in a 21-17 loss to the 4th-ranked Buckeyes.

The officiating crew seemed hell-bent on helping Ohio State avoid an embarrassing loss at home.

Marcus Satterfield continues to disappoint in his unimaginative playcalling. The defense gave him every chance to win the game.

Oh my gosh we have a kicker! John Hohl is the real deal. If this defense continues to show up we can win out!  And the mobility of Railola was on full display. He needs to continue to call his own number.  9-3 still possible. The next month will be fun to watch.

Satterfield Struggles: Nebraska's Offensive Coordinator in Crisis

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Out of the frying pan and into the inferno Nebraska travels to Columbus for its second mid-term exam.

Marcus Satterfield "has to remind himself to run" and doesn't have a handle on basic performance metrics of his offense. Expectations are on the floor after the offensive coordinator held a press conference.

There is still a lot to play for as Nebraska could become bowl-eligible this week, but SMQ sees another blowout loss at 42 - 7 from Jay.  Bob's 11-1 preseason prediction is already in a landfill near Anselmo-Merna Nebraska.  The only choice was do we dump it in Anselmo or Merna?  Bob is coming in with the 35-21 Buckeyes. Jay's prediction of 9-3 lives on but only by a thread!  Both of us are calling the over at 48.5.

Hold on tight. This could be a track meet!

Nebraska's 56-7 Loss: A Fan's Perspective

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Nebraska massively fails its first midterm and gets decimated by Indiana 56-7.

The performance against Indiana failed on every level. It was so bad that Sunday Morning Quarterback's guest was the Unknown Husker Fan!

While butt-whoopings happen occasionally the SMQ team was left scratching their collective heads about how Nebraska failed in EVERY aspect of the game, with special attention to how Nebraska always seems to be massively underprepared on offense.

Why Las Vegas Hotels Are a Disaster & Indiana Football's Shocking Rise

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Huskers face a likely Top-10 team as mid-term exams begin in the form of Indiana and Ohio State in back-to-back weeks.

Curt Cignetti and Kurtis Rourke will be names that Husker fans will never forget as they are introduced to a new brand of Indiana Football.

Big Noon Kickoff rolls into Bloomington which could produce a classic, with the league's best offense going up against a stingy Nebraska defense.

SMQ will bet the moneyline and the under predicting a 24-21 victory sending them to Columbus with a 6-1 record.

Huskers Defense HOLDS Against Rutgers

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Husker Defense "Bows their necks!" and defeats a tough Rutgers team 14-7.SMQ also invited Dean Kathy Farrell on the podcast to discuss her number 7 ranked online MBA program and other College of Business matters.

SMQ believes that Dean Kathy Farrell should be paid more than Matt Rhule because her program is ranked higher!

But Matt and Tony White deserve a lot of credit for a defensive performance "that is better than any that I have been a part of" according to Coach Rhule.

The bye week comes at an opportune time as the Huskers will heal up for an undefeated Indiana in two weeks.

FAILED New Jersey Invasion

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Greg Schiano brings an undefeated Rutgers team to Lincoln for the Big 10's BEST matchup of the week. We expect another hard-fought battle with the Big Red emerging victorious.

The SMQ squad was hugely distracted by the VP debate but still managed to squeeze out some football talk amongst all the nonsense. Rutgers DID give up over 500 yards - at home - to Washington last week. We expect more of the same.

Nebraska vs Purdue: Huskers Covered the Spread!

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Negative Nebraska "fans" wail in agony as the team improves to 4-1. Someone needs some warm milk and a nap!

After a quick-ish recap of their time in Italy, Jay and Bob spend their time wondering why so many fans are negative after beating the Boilermakers by 18 points!!! Is it because they're betting the over? Knock it off Husker fans, we're 2 wins from a bowl game! Even if it is the Duke's Mayo Bowl!

Greg Schiano brings a reset and motivated Rutgers team to town. Matt Rhule will have to work hard to pass this test!

Nebraska vs Illinois: Can Rail Prevent Another Loss?

Sunday Morning Quarterback

The SMQ crew phones in from Italy to recap Illinois and Predict Purdue.

The Illinois game was in the middle of the night in Rome, Italy. SMQ did not see the game live but consumed everything available online.

Our belief is this step back will not be a regression to the mean. Rather leaders will lead and we'll bounce back.

What happened to the defense? Thank God for Brett Maher to the rescue regarding our sub-par kicking game.

The Boilermakers will not be Spoilermakers this year. Nebraska will win 45-7.

Huskers will prevail in a 60-minute fistfight with the Illini!

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Nebraska enters Big Ten play with swagger and confidence not seen in years.

Illinois vs. Nebraska on Friday is set to be an exciting clash in the Big Ten Conference. Both head coaches, Matt Rhule of Nebraska and Bret Bielema of Illinois have deep respect for each other and are preparing their teams accordingly.

Matt Rhule emphasized the importance of discipline and mental toughness, stating, "Every game in the Big Ten is a challenge, and we have to bring our best effort. Our guys need to be ready to handle the pressure and execute our game plan effectively."

On the other side, Bret Bielema highlighted the challenges of playing at Nebraska, at night in front of a raucous crowd: "It will be a challenging environment."

Both teams will learn a lot about themselves under the lights Friday night.

The Huskers and Future #1 NFL Draft Pick Dylan Raiola crush the Panthers of Northern Iowa

Sunday Morning Quarterback

SMQ thinks the only reason people aren't happier is because they were paying too much attention to the gambling lines.

The Huskers gave up a grand total of THREE points AND covered the ridiculous (but surprisingly accurate) spread of 30.5 POINTS, yet some Husker fans seem a little sore that they didn't cover the over. Dylan Raiola looks like the NFL's future #1 draft pick and future all-time passing yards leader at Nebraska - after 3 games he's #41 on the all-time list!

Plus, we teach young George how to properly execute the GO BIG RED chant.

The SMQ team and Teammates CEO DeMoine Adams are still a little hung over from the victory over Colorado but shake it off to predict a rout of the Panthers of Northern Iowa. SMQ reviews the epic beatdown of the Colorado Buffalo, 28-10

Sunday Morning Quarterback

The Sunday Morning Quarterback crew is unanimously predicting a Husker victory vs. Colorado!

Sunday Morning Quarterback

It will be a high-scoring affair with Nebraska prevailing 45 to 35.

This Saturday, the Colorado Buffaloes will face off against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in a highly anticipated college football matchup. As two traditional rivals, this game is expected to bring exciting action and intense competition. Both teams have passionate fan bases, making for an electric atmosphere at the stadium.

Shadeur Sanders and Travis Hunter are sure to dazzle, but Dylan Raiola and a stable of receivers and running backs will rise to the occasion and overcome these two first-round draft picks.

Expect thrilling moments, pivotal plays, and the kind of rivalry spirit that makes college football so special. With both teams eager to secure a win, this matchup promises to be a memorable one for players and fans alike. Whether you're watching from the stands or cheering from home, anticipation runs high for this clash under the Saturday night lights. Bring your Nebraska Not So Nice!

Huskers Roll 40-7 vs. UTEP

Sunday Morning Quarterback

The quarterback, receivers, running backs, offense, defense, and special teams, all impressed.

Nebraska football delivered an impressive performance against UTEP, securing a commanding victory with a final score of 40-7. In an exciting college debut, quarterback Dylan Raiola showcased his talent by throwing for 238 yards and connecting for two touchdowns, demonstrating both poise and skill in leading the Cornhuskers' offense. The team's overpowering defense and cohesive balanced gameplay contributed significantly to this decisive win, setting a positive tone for the remainder of the season.

SMQ predicts major success for the Huskers and a playoff berth

Sunday Morning Quarterback

The Huskers will bounce back from a very tough season in 2023. Two future NFL quarterbacks in the quarterback room, coupled with amazing weapons on the outside will dramatically improve the turnover-plagued offense from last season.

An already stout defense will benefit from the maturation of key senior leaders returning, and will be anchored by the best defensive line in the league: Death Row. This plus an enhanced coaching group with John Butler could make this defense the top defense in the Big Ten.

This could be the year we’ve been waiting for 20 years as long-suffering Husker fans.

Nebraska pulls THE most Nebraska ending of recent memory in dropping a 13-10 decision to Iowa.

Sunday Morning Quarterback

SMQ tastes the salty tears of frustration, as there is no bowling joy in Lincoln (or Hartington, or wahoo, or Beatrice, or Valentine, or even Red Cloud) for our beloved Cornhuskers.

The final podcast of the season spends a few minutes reflecting on the gut-busting loss to Iowa, the false hope and bitter disappointment of a 5-3 start, but also our unrelenting faith in the new path of Husker football. We also invite Coach Ruhle to come on the pod and set us straight! See you at the Spring Game!

Nebraska Cannot overcome their out-of-shape coaching staff in a back-breaking 24-17 loss.

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Clock mismanagement, not going on offense in OT, and general questions about the offensive scheme led to another tough, tough loss for the Huskers.

All season long SMQ had wondered what would happen if the team raced out to a TWO touchdown lead... and now we know that the coaching staff seems a little rusty on the college game. Plus lots of chatter about Chubba, doing what works, why we've abandoned the tight end, giving thanks that SMQ was NOT at the game, Jay at Black Friday, Bob's (very limited) hopes and dreams, how much it might cost SMQ to sponsor the Birmingham Bowl, and, most importantly, which bowl game will have more fights - the Pinstripe Bowl or the Fenway Bowl?

The Nebraska Bought-Ins will triumph over the Wisconsin Checked-Outs!

Sunday Morning Quarterback

SMQ has abandoned all hope on offense but thinks the Blackshirts will deliver a 10-3 victory!

SMQ has a sneaking suspicion that - unlike with Nebraska - the Wisconsin locker room is not picking up what their coach is throwing down. We remain eternally optimistic about the work Matt Ruhle is doing at Nebraska - way more so than the Fickle Badgers of Wisconsin. Because if there's one thing you can't count on, it's a Fickle Badger! Plus, lots of chatter about why we chose not to head to Wisconsin for the game.

Questionable Play Calling Leads to Stunning 13-10 Loss to Maryland

Sunday Morning Quarterback

The Huskers once again ignore the obvious calls, resulting in yet another gut-busting loss.

While Matt Rhule has done many, many good things to raise up the Huskers this year, the SMQ team asks when there will be some accountability for continuing - despite amassing the most turnovers in college football - to throw the ball to the opposition in critical situations. While you can blame the players, the players don't call the plays. Plus, lots of chatter about management accountability and debate about whether attending the Wisconsin game is a sound idea.

Sunday Morning Quarterback

SMQ mangles the description of a Terrapin yet manages to predict a 20-17 Husker victory!

While we all know that little brothers are the best, the Blackshirts will hold Tua's little brother enough for the Huskers to emerge victorious! Plus, lots of chatter about replay, bowing down to television money, smart TVs, Skynet, Jay's new twist on "Go Big Red!" and more on this week's episode.

Missed Opportunity for the Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Michigan State

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Huskers stumble in East Lansing in 20-17 loss.

Matt Rhule's crew did not live up to their standards, lost the turnover battle, played anemic tentative offense and special teams were dominated by Michigan State. Even the defense while good against the run left gaping holes in the secondary. All this led to 0-1 for the week. Failure can be Matt Rhule's friend, but another hungry team awaits in the Maryland Terrapins.  Turning failure in every phase of the is the challenge for Husker coaches this week. Heinrich Haarberg is at a turning point.  Does he move forward or continue to regress?

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Nebraska continues its winning ways with a 35-7 thrashing of the Tuckered-Out Spartans.

Nebraska Overcomes Five Fumbles to Defeat Purdue 31-14

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Matt Rhule has a team that doesn't panic despite plenty of reasons to do so.

At 5-3 and a share of the Big Ten West lead all sorts of positive outcomes lay before the Huskers. But Matt Rhule's mindset of going 1-0 each week is the order of the day. Don't think about bowl games or the Big Ten West. Just go 1-0 vs. Michigan State and good things will happen. We have a top-20 defense that can keep the Huskers on a winning track. Injury-depleted Huskers will defeat Purdue 21-10

Sunday Morning Quarterback

It’s the next-man-up time on the offensive line and receiving corp.

Matt Rhule says he’s never seen anything like it on the injury front. Despite that SMQ predicts the fifth Husker victory in six games. Expect a dominant, defensive performance and young players, stepping up left, right, and center to fill the injury gaps.

Nebraska earns fourth win in five games vs. Northwestern 17-9

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Despite early stumbles, Huskers maintain composure and throw the dagger to Malichi Coleman.

The Cornhuskers avenge the loss in Dublin with impressive poise and a complete lack of panic. It was fitting that the game ended in a sack, one of eight on the day.  Nebraska's defense is now ranked 20th in the country coming in 4th overall in rush defense.  Imagine the possibilities if we can improve on offense in the back half of the season.  A hat must be tipped to the Husker women for an epic five-set win vs. Number 1 Wisconsin in volleyball. Very fun to watch!

Huskers bounce back with strong defense and defeat Illinois 20-7!

Sunday Morning Quarterback

SMQ checks in with former Husker B-Ball Coach Tim Miles, the Mountain West Coach of the Year.

Nebraska's defense stops Illinois on three fourth downs including a goal line stand to start the game.  That combined with stifling run defense held Illinois to just 7 points.  The Huskers could be bowl eligible by November 4th and then the Big 10 West emerges as a possibility.

SMQ also checks in with former Nebraska Tim Miles who discusses the reality of operating in the new NIL and Transfer Portal ERA.  Coach Miles was Mountain West coach of the year leading the Spartans to a 24-14 season.  Coach Miles delivers a masterclass on the new realities of college athletics.

SMQ Prediction: Huskers will bounce back with a victory 21 to 17 vs. Illinois

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Matt Rhule challenged the team to "show up!" We predict they will.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have an opportunity to return to .500 and could be bowl-eligible in one month. Much depends upon how the team responds after the underwhelming show vs. Michigan. There is a lot to play for under the Friday Night Lights in Champaign. This is an important inflection point on the trajectory for Matt Rhule's first season. Quoting Coach Rhule: "We'll know a lot about this team on Friday."

Michigan puts the hammer down on the Huskers 45-7

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Harbaugh took his foot off the gas or it could have been much worse.

Michigan served up a reality check for the Husker hopeful.  SMQ, Urban Meyer and Will Compton all saw a much closer game, but Michigan let their players do the talking.  Jim Harbaugh's crew looked like Tom Osborne teams of the 90's.  Dominance on both sides of the ball, elite runners and a quarterback who is extremely accurate completing 80% of his passes coupled with a dominant defense made for a long afternoon in Lincoln.  Rebuilds are like renovating a home.  It always takes longer than you think.  But the soft underbelly of the schedule lies ahead so the possibility of a bowl game is intact.

SMQ Prediction: The Nebraska Cornhuskers will beat The Michigan Wolverines 31-28 in overtime

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Michigan is over rated. They have played all games at home and haven’t faced a difficult opponent.

The data suggests Michigan is overrated. While their defense is rated 6th overall their level of competition has been light facing only: East Carolina, UNLV, Bowling Green and Rutgers…all at home. Now they will face the number 1 rated Husker rush defense (nationally) on the road. This will force Michigan to pass and Nebraska will have two takeaways in the form of interceptions as the pass rush will cause J.J. McCarthy to force errant throws. Their offense is ranked 60th in the nation. The law firm of Haarberg/Grant will again rush for 300 yards. The game will be tied 28-28 at end of regulation. Tristan Alvano will shock the Big 10 with a walk off field goal to win the game in overtime.

Nebraska Cornhuskers delivered a rugged old school 28-14 win vs. La. Tech!

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Huskers deliver another stout defensive performance combined with 312 yards rushing to overwhelm Sonny Cumbie's Bulldogs.

SMQ forecasted a stout defense and another gritty performance by Heinrich Haarberg. They both delivered.  Anthony Grant rushed for 135 yards and 1 touchdown and earned his alpha status. Nebraska now has the number 1 rush defense in the nation.  They'll need it as number 2 ranked (overall) Michigan rolls into town.

Bob and Jay welcome American war hero Andrew Bundermann to the podcast.  Andrew was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in the Battle of Kamdesh in Afghanistan in 2009 (the most decorated battle since WWII).  He was prominently featured in the movie The Outpost based on a book written by Jake Tapper.

Captain Bundermann is a Minnesota Golden Gopher and a huge fan of the Minnesota Vikings.

SMQ Prediction: Nebraska Cornhuskers will defeat Louisiana Tech 35-7

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Huskers will survive a depleted running back room with stout defense and another gritty performance by Heinrich Haarberg.

The Blackshirts are ranked 2nd in the nation in rushing defense while playing 37 players.  This strong defensive trend will continue while Anthony Grant emerges as the Alpha running back for the rest of the season.  Minnesota native Emmet Johnson will shine as the solid number two running back.  Special teams will continue flawless execution in this 35-7 victory which will deliver the under for a theoretical parlay.

SMQ is also pleased to announce the weekend podcast guest American hero Andrew Bundermann. Captain Bundermann was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in the Battle of Kamdesh in 2009 in Afghanistan.  He is prominently featured in the movie The Outpost. Andrew is a Minnesota Golden Gopher and a huge fan of the Minnesota Vikings.

Nebraska earns first win of Matt Rhule Era!

Sunday Morning Quarterback

Bob and Jay break down strong defense, reliable special teams, an emerging quarterback Heinrich Haarberg, and low penalties adding up to a strong first win for Coach Rhule.  Trev Alberts gives Coach Rhule the game ball.

The slow rebuild of the Matt Rhule era takes a positive step with a Northern Illinois team that has shown they can be dangerous beating Boston College, who in turn took Florida State to the mat.

Even the offense showed well late in the game with 95 yards in the fourth quarter.  There is a lot to like in this game.  Injuries take a toll though with the loss of Gabe Ervin and Rhamir Johnson.
